Origin

A proclamation begins

THE PROCLAMATION

On November 9, 1993, an album was released from Staten Island, a suburb of New York. Nine MCs honed their brotherhood by repeatedly watching the movie "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" before arriving at this form.

"Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" was technically the work of one man. RZA produced nearly every track, completing it with just a sampler and records in a small studio. The budget was meager and studio time was limited. However, all these constraints created an acoustic density and pressure that would later define the "East Coast sound."

C.R.E.A.M. Protect Ya Neck. Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta F’ Wit. These were song titles, but also linguistic declarations. They weren’t just released as music; they functioned as decrees from Staten Island, the "forgotten borough."

One item held in this archive is a promotional LP manufactured in 1994 (RCA Records / NOT FOR SALE). This single, not intended for commercial distribution but distributed only to the media and industry professionals, serves as a pre-release announcement.

Prehistory

Prehistory - Two Setbacks

TWO FALSE STARTS

There's a reason Wu-Tang chose to go their own way as a "collective." Two of the core members had previously been swallowed up by the workings of a major label. There were two setbacks before the proclamation.

In February 1991, GZA released his debut album, ’Words from the Genius," under the name "The Genius" on Cold Chillin'. In July of the same year, RZA released the EP "Ooh I Love You Rakeem" under the name "Prince Rakeem" on Tommy Boy. These two works are the only solo releases by members that existed before the formation of Wu-Tang. RZA, under the name Prince Rakeem, also made a guest appearance on "Words from the Genius," and the two had already shared the mic.

However, neither of them stayed on the charts, and both left the label. If they didn't sell, they were dropped. The two of them learned the logic of major labels firsthand. Without this setback, the later Wu-Tang would not have been born. RZA conceived of the unprecedented five-year plan "to take the lead as a clan and send each member to a different label" in order not to repeat the same mistake.

Knowing the logic that they would be fired if they didn't sell, the two formed a group to take the initiative.

This archive holds these two. The "first voices" of two people from a time before the name Wu-Tang even existed. Every decree has a story that wasn't told before it.

03

THE NAME

Origin of the name

SHAOLIN DNA

The name ’Wu-Tang" was taken from the martial arts film *Shaolin and Wu-Tang* (1983). This film, loved by RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard, is the source of the group's name. The story, which depicts the conflict and fusion of the two schools, Shaolin and Wu-Tang, became the moniker for the nine-member group.

Meanwhile, the album title "36 Chambers" is derived from another masterpiece, "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" (1978). The story's structure of mastering martial arts by overcoming each of the thirty-six "chambers" became the album's backbone. RZA reinterpreted the philosophy of martial arts films—the stages of training and mental discipline—as a hip-hop methodology. The lineage comes from "Shaolin and Wu-Tang," while the ideology and structure are from "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin."

The B2 movie posters, first pressings with OST obi strips, and movie pamphlets held in this archive are all from "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin." While not the origin of the group's name itself, it is the source of the album title "36 Chambers" and can be positioned as the visual origin of the series, connecting to Wu-Tang's cultural DNA.

04

THE SOUND

Sound Designer

RZA THE PRODUCER

RZA was almost entirely responsible for creating the sound of "36 Chambers." It was made at Firehouse Studio in New York. It was a dim, small, and inexpensive studio. There was no abundance of equipment anywhere.

The samplers used were three units: the E-mu SP-1200, the Ensoniq EPS-16 Plus, and the ASR-10. All of them were borrowed from friends in Staten Island. That density and pressure were born from the constraint of pushing borrowed machines to their limits.

RZA used soul and jazz from the 50s and 60s, sampling artists from Thelonious Monk to Otis Redding and the Jackson 5. He manipulated the tempo by slowing or speeding up the tracks to create a “chipmunk” effect. Then, he interspersed dialogue from kung fu movies. Dusty records and cheap equipment lifted the heavy East Coast atmosphere.

While the EPS-16 Plus and ASR-10 handled the bulk of the programming, the E-mu SP-1200 was one of those three units. The SP-1200 (formerly owned by DJ MASTERKEY) housed in this series’ #03 collection is very much in the same lineage as the methodology RZA used to craft “36 Chambers.” The machine remains in the label’s archives, while the method has gone down in music history.

Push borrowed machinery to its limits.
Those constraints determined the sound of the East Coast.

E-mu SP-1200. The same model of sampler that RZA used on *36 Chambers*. The unit in this archive’s collection belonged to the former DJ MASTERKEY (Buddha Brand / #03). That raw, heavy East Coast sound was carved out of machines like this.

Promotional copy label credit: "PRODUCED, MIXED AND ARRANGED BY PRINCE RAKEEM "THE RZA'". This notation dates from a period when the name Prince Rakeem was still used, and Ol' Dirty Bastard is listed as co-producer. This inscription serves as evidence that "36 Chambers" was largely the work of a single person.

05

THE STRATEGY

Five-year plan design

THE FIVE-YEAR PLAN

Having learned from two previous setbacks, RZA devised an unprecedented plan. Nine members would operate as a "clan" while each also pursued a solo career. Once the clan established its name, each member would be sent to a different record label. That was the "5 Year Plan."

In a standard contract where one company holds everyone, a single failure means everyone gets cut. That's exactly what the two experienced in the prequel. That's why RZA didn't concentrate the risk on one company. He diversified it across labels, while retaining control. He flipped the script, moving from being the one who gets cut if something doesn't sell, to being the one who gets everything back if it does.

This plan wasn't just wishful thinking. It was actually put into practice, and as you'll see in the next chapter, “Nine Circles,” members began releasing solo works one after another from their respective labels. The ability to balance being a group and being an individual, by designing that balance as a "system," is what made Wu-Tang Clan unique.

From being the one cut if you don't sell, to being the one in charge.

”Created by Everyone” 90s Hip Hop Specialty Label | C.r.e.a.m. Team Records
The solo works will be arranged by record label. The "5-year plan" of sending the nine members to different labels, rather than gathering them all under one company, is evident at a glance through the different logos. The decentralization was a design to maintain control.

06

CONSTELLATION

Nine's orbit

NINE ORBITS

The five-year plan was executed. While maintaining the clan's gravity, the nine orbits gradually became independent, one after another. Each member released solo works under their own name from separate labels. The path that had swallowed them up one by one in ancient times was now completely reversed.

Although each member was signed to a different label, they were all tied together by the common thread of RZA's production. The gravitational pull of the collective and the independence of the individual. Both were realized here.

This archive does not aim to collect all nine members. Instead, it focuses on the key solo classics that defined the solo golden era (1994–2000). It kicks off with Method Man's *Tical* (1994) and Ol’ Dirty Bastard's *Return to the 36 Chambers* (1995), followed by Raekwon, GZA, Ghostface, RZA, and Inspectah Deck, concluding with Ghostface Killah's *Supreme Clientele* (2000). The decision not to force in U-God or Masta Killa is an editorial choice to select individual impactful works rather than everything. Also included are the original, unopened, US-sealed Raekwon 1st and the Wu-Tang × Hardgood Co. Inspectah Deck signature skateboard.

”Created by Everyone” 90s Hip Hop Specialty Label | C.r.e.a.m. Team Records
The credits for each solo album always feature the same name: Produced by RZA. Even though they were released on different labels, it was his production that bound the nine orbits into one.

Four sealed cards

THE SEALED PRESSINGS

『Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…』 was created as a “film” starring Raekwon, with Ghostface in a supporting role and RZA as director. This archive includes the original US LP (unopened, sealed) and three 12-inch singles cut from it (all unopened). Released around 1995, they remain untouched by any needle. The unplayed sounds are frozen in time within their shrink wrap. The very choice not to open them is the philosophy behind this archive.

All mothers. I have in my collection the original US LP of "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...", still sealed and unopened. An album released in 1995, it has remained sealed without ever being played. The three singles below were cut from this album.

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... (LP)

Raekwon / 1995 / US Original LP Unopened Sealed

Single released on June 26, 1995. The A-side, “Criminology,” featuring Ghostface Killah (under the name Tony Starks), is one of the album's most hardcore tracks. The B-side, "Glaciers of Ice," produced by RZA and featuring Ghostface and Masta Killa, is known for its lyrics that speak of a unique "color." This was the single that previewed the album's worldview to the world.

September 25, 1995, the third album and biggest hit. A definitive posse cut featuring Ghostface, Method Man, and Cappadonna, with Method Man's hook still sung today. The B-side is the masterpiece "Incarcerated Scarfaces." A record symbolizing the brilliance of OB4CL.

October 24, 1994, the origin of a song, first recorded and first released on an album. It was originally provided for the soundtrack of the movie *Fresh*. The relationship between Raekwon and Ghostface, and the story of the masterpiece *OB4CL*, all began here.

07

THE SUMMIT

The pinnacle of the Five-Year Plan

WU-TANG FOREVER

After each member made a name for themselves as solo artists, the nine members reunited. In 1997, they released the double album masterpiece "Wu-Tang Forever." It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. This was the moment their five-year plan had fully come to fruition.

Each member became a star, and then they all returned to one. The men who were individually swallowed in the prehistory now stood at the top as a group. Being a clan and being an individual. This second album reached its maximum output by harmonizing both.

This archive holds a 4-LP US original pressing (still in its unopened shrink wrap). A price sticker reading “$16.99” remains on the shrink wrap just as it was back then, suggesting this copy was sold at the renowned New York record store Fat Beats (Loud / RCA). It’s not just that the seal hasn’t been broken.Along with the price tag, the year 1997 remains sealed inside. This record, upon which no one has ever played, preserves a moment at the pinnacle of its time.

An unopened one seals the moment of victory as it is.

The clan that became a game

BEYOND MUSIC

The clan, having reached its apex, expanded beyond music. In 1999, Wu-Tang became a game. *Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style* (Paradox Development/Activision, PlayStation; European release titled *Taste the Pain*) was a four-player simultaneous fighting game where digital avatars of the members battled, fusing martial arts films and hip-hop on screen. A special edition even included a custom W-shaped controller (a collector's item that satisfied the desire for ownership more than usability).

What this archive holds is the Japanese budget re-release label “SuperLite 1500” version (Success, 2000). This is not a special edition because it was a “hit,” but rather a budget re-release line that reissued the master recording for 1,500 yen (excluding tax) after its initial release. It's a disc where an unusual title from overseas reached the hands of Japanese players at a low price. It's a record of Clan's expansion into "Brand/Universe."

FINAL CHAMBER

May 24, 2026, Yokohama

MAY 24, 2026 — YOKOHAMA

The official performance name was "Wu-Tang Forever: The Final Chamber." This was their first concert in Japan in 29 years as a solo performance. On May 24, 2026, at K-Arena Yokohama, members of the clan – RZA / GZA / Raekwon / Ghostface Killah / Method Man / Masta Killa / Young Dirty Bastard – stood before the Japanese audience.

They chose their own names to mark the end. But what was there was not an end, but a time that condensed 35 years into one place. If the two failures of 1991 were the beginning, and one night in 2026 were the end of that chapter, then in between, a history of hip hop had been written.

THE WORD

Words inherited

90s HIP-HOP ENERGY

That night, RZA described the Clan's sound with one word. Spoken from the stage, to the crowd, by his own mouth, we heard this word here.

“90s hip-hop energy”
When C.r.e.a.m. Team Records defines itself as a "90s Hip Hop specialty label," the word at the core of that language is the same as this one. On May 24, 2026, in Yokohama, that identity was confirmed by the voice of RZA himself.

The "THE FINAL CHAMBER Commemorative Unsaleable Flyer" held in this archive, along with the Tower Records limited edition commemorative fully-produced limited editions (2016 Vinyl with Obi / 2018 Colored Vinyl / WU-TANG: 36 CHAMBERS cassette tape), are objects at the end of a timeline that spans from 1991 to 2026.

WHY IT MATTERS

Connection, not storage

NOT STORAGE, BUT CONNECTION

Prehistory → Proclamation → Name → Sound → Plan → Nine Orbits → Final Chamber. Physical records stacked in this order form the structure of this archive. Two setbacks, the blood of Shaolin Temple, borrowed machinery, the five-year plan, nine orbits, and one night in Yokohama. All of it exists on a single timeline.

From two unreleased records, to a one-night stage. The proclamation issued by nine voices, 33 years later, resonated in Yokohama with the same words. Ownership is not possession. We will connect this record to the future, along with its time.

The proclamation issued by the Nine Voices echoed through Yokohama 33 years later, in the same words. What #04 records is not merely a single record. It is “time” itself, spanning from 1991 to 2026.
