Although the two have walked completely different paths as artists, they have much in common in their pursuit of Japanese hip-hop. By the way, the collaboration between DJ MITSU THE BEATS and Shing02 that is known is "CA LA MODE" from GAGLE's fifth album, *VG+*, released in 2014. However, there is also a remix version of "Flow," a track from GAGLE's next album, *Vanta Black*, featuring Shing02. This song was not officially released, only appearing on a promotional CD, making it a rare track highly coveted by GAGLE fans. Including this remix, the two have only collaborated a total of two times.

In writing this draft, I heard directly from DJ MITSU THE BEATS and Shing02, and their words conveyed that they were fans of each other long before they performed together.

The first time I heard Shing02 was on the Mary Joy compilation "Tags Of The Times" (released in 1998), on the track "A Day Like Any Other Remix (A Day Like No Other)." He was rapping bilingually, and I thought, "This guy is so cool." After that, "Luv(sic.)" and other songs also left a deep impression.

I first heard GAGLE's music in the early 2000s. I thought they were orthodox, yet incredibly sophisticated. My first impression of Mitsu-kun (DJ MITSU THE BEATS) was that he was someone who made cool, beautiful beats. So, I always had this one-sided desire to "meet him once."

The two actually met much later, at a time when Shing02 visited Sendai for a live performance. They gradually deepened their relationship, which led to their participation in the aforementioned album "VG+". This single "Memento" is a further extension of that.

When we talked about making a piece with C.R.E.A.M. Team with a 90s hip-hop theme, Shingo was the first rapper who came to mind as someone I wanted to work with. It's not just because he's a legendary rapper, but because he's so original, and there's no one else who can do things in that style. I also wanted to appeal overseas with this project, so I asked him to rap in English.

The track "Memento" is composed of piano melodies echoing in deep depths, with a beat that, while seemingly simple, is masterfully and comfortably interwoven. DJ MITSU THE BETAS created this track while envisioning Shing02 rapping over it.

I made this with the intention of blending a 90s-style drum sound with the piano style I like now. While the theme is 90s hip-hop, I wasn't aiming to replicate 90s hip-hop exactly. I wanted to incorporate current technology while still respecting 90s hip-hop. Knowing that Shingo-san would bring a proper theme, I focused on creating a track that could support it.

Mitsu sent me a beat, and I immediately said “I'll do it.” I looked at the picture, and it was like deciding on a title. Listening to the beat, the phrase “Memento Mori” came to mind. So, I combined the image of "death" that came from the sound with the fact that it was during the pandemic. It was a bit of wordplay with those elements.

The melancholic piano melody evokes a requiem, which connects to the title “Memento” (Memento Mori = remember you must die). While the theme of "death" is central, the lyrics, which unfold seamlessly, are brimming with Shing02's unique richness and creativity in expression.

At that moment, I happened to be in recording mode, so I immediately recorded something based on the initial impulse of hearing the beat and then quickly returned it. There are times when I spend months meticulously writing lyrics, but this time I feel it turned out with a freestyle-like feel, in a good way. Also, regarding my recent style in English rap, instead of trying to rap with really difficult rhymes, I aim for very simple rhymes and express profound ideas in the descriptions between the rhymes. In English, there's the phrase "between the lines," but in my case, it's "between rhymes."

For example, in the first verse, the line mentioning former basketball player Robert Horry would make fans who know Shing02's love for basketball smirk, and right after that, the name of Walter White, the protagonist of the drama "Breaking Bad," also appears. By firmly fitting these two names into the rhyming flow, those who know the story of "Breaking Bad" can easily understand how it strongly links to the theme of this song. The hook, combining the three words "Memento," "Lamento," and "My mental," is also very simply constructed, but it depicts the flow of emotions behind it, resonating deeply.

For me, the track is all about the producer (DJ MITSU THE BEATS), so as a rapper, I want to add as much depth as possible without breaking the song's atmosphere.

When I make beats, I generally have an image like, "I wonder if they'll rap in this kind of style?" But this time, there were parts where I was surprised, like, "They came with this kind of theme?!" and it turned into a deep theme that I wouldn't have thought of myself, so I really felt it was good that I asked Shingo-san.

DJ MITSU THE BEATS, for whom this “Memento” has become the "core track" of his self-produced album to be released from C.r.e.a.m. Team Records. Listening to this song will give you a vague idea of what kind of album he will create while digesting the theme of "90s Hip Hop." It is undoubtedly a truly special track, especially with the participation of Shing02, who was in the heart of the 90s US underground hip hop scene.

It's not just that it's themed around 90s hip-hop; I feel like I could see the present-day music created by someone who experienced 90s hip-hop, beyond that. I think some people will hear this song and say, "It's not 90s hip-hop," but I'm glad I was able to make what I was aiming for.

Finally, after their third collaboration, they asked Shing02 to speak about the appeal of DJ MITSU THE BEATS from his perspective.

That's the highest compliment for me, but also the producer I feel most at ease with. Mitsu-kun's beats are perfectly EQ'd, well-balanced, and you can tell that a lot of trial and error went into them. It's like nothing is wasted, reaching the level of a craftsman. And he reached that level a long time ago, which is amazing.
